The theory of going about problem solving using unrelated stimuli: I am Creativity (And so Can You!)
To create basically means to bring something into existence that did not exist before. In idea creativity, this most often comes in the form of already existing things or aspects put together in a new way. If the result of this merge has aesthetic or practical value, it is seen as an act of creativity.
The most common technique for trying to put together something to create something new, is brainstorming. But a problem that might arise when brainstorming a problem or topic, is the constriction of your own mind related to the particular thing you wish to combine with something else. It can be hard to branch out of your understanding of the word and the logical limitations that follow, and you might end up with ideas lacking originality.
The random word technique is a simple technique that will help you with your approach to the problem. In using the technique you will employ a random word (preferably a noun) in the process of solving your designated problem. A randomly picked word will create new associations and enable you to go about your problem from a perspective you normally would not consider. The technique frees you from restricted thinking and conventional guidelines by finding combinations of words you would not think of without it. The link between your problem and the random word can be as vague as you like, but the words are not to have a prior connection, as this would obliterate the idea of dealing with the problem from a new angle. The truly creative aspect is to make that connection yourself and not trying to justify it by finding any logical link. Random word is purely stimulus-based.
On to executing. A word would never be quite random if you were to think of it yourself, attempting to make it random. Subconscious ideas and associations will most surely affect the outcome. But fear not! You can obtain a random word in a number of ways. There are books dedicated to the technique with tables of random words, which you choose from with the throw of a dice; there are also random word generators on the internet for this very purpose. Too much fuss? Well then, just open a book on a random page, put your finger to the page and pick the word it lands on, no sweat yo. It ain’t nuthin’ but a G thang.
